>Waifu garbage has been around for decades; it ain't going away no matter how many auteurs you put onto a pedestal.
I've been watching anime for decades, and waifu shit has been a mostly recent phenomenon, where as before. Even the colloquial use of the term is a recent thing. I don't give about a shit that it never will go away, I hate that it's been dominating the zeitgeist. It the most commercial and vacuous trend thanks in part to memes and social media.

You talk about putting auteurs on a pedestal in a mocking manner, but really we would give praise and acknowledgement to these artists. These people have and continue to do incredible things with art form, but you hardly every see discussion around their accomplishments and skill. Most people who watch anime today wouldn't even be able to name them. Especially on this board of all places, where most of what constitutes as anime mostly comes down to what makes you ejaculate or what looks cute, or who the latest waifu. There are entire boards for consumer discussion. You would think the one place you'd see an appreciation of the artists an their techniques is on here.

>With anime's international success and subsequent government subsidization in recent years, we're only now getting privy to just how bad labor conditions are in the industry.
Thank speaks to just how commercialized the medium has become. Everything is made relative cheaply with much outsourcing and animators and designers barely compensated. There's very little respect for the craft and creators in this current paradigm. Most anime is made with merchandise at the forefront. It's more entertainment than it is art.

I'm not saying every single studio needs to fiance some arthouse passion project regardless if they have the budget to or not, but that's the nature of the market. 80's and 90's was a marriage of art and commerce like never before and gave rise to a golden age of animation. Some of the most talent artists and animators cut their teeth in these periods. Even after the bubble in Japan popped, the 2000's saw its fair share of seminal works by talented animators both new and old. Even up to today there are many amazing artists making their debuts. In order to take the poor labor conditions of the anime industry, we need to Begin valuing its creators more, and that means celebrating more auteurs as well. Not just when something is a commercial success over seas. Not only giving a shit when it's concerns the latest waifu in a generic mas appealing anime, that you can use as a reaction image or as an avatar.

>and waifu shit has been a mostly recent phenomenon
No, the waifu shit has existed since at least the 80s, with the popularity of Lum Invader from Urusei Yatsura being the easiest example to bring up. Ranma ½ fan clubs in the United States during the 90s come to mind as well. What is different, as you've already surmised, are these obsessions being amplified through the internet.
>I hate that it's been dominating the zeitgeist.
Stereotypes exist for a reason! Although to be fair, people tend to forget events like "The Otaku Murderer" case, where Japan collectively debated as to whether or not watching anime and succumbing to waifu shit helped produce a cannibal, necrophiliac, rapist pedophile. Point being, the zeitgeist could always be in worse shape, y'know?
>You talk about putting auteurs on a pedestal in a mocking manner
I have as much respect for "auteurs" like Katushiro Otomo, Mamoru Oshii and Satoshi Kon as any other fan of their works, but to suggest that they aren't praised *enough* for their artistic contributions is, quite frankly, bullshit.
>you hardly every see discussion around their accomplishments and skill.
There are plenty of discussions, books and interviews; it's just that the vast majority of them haven't been translated to English yet.
>what constitutes as anime mostly comes down to what makes you ejaculate or what looks cute, or who the latest waifu.
Ain't nothing wrong with that. You sound like the spitting image of Hayao Miyazaki, who for decades has insisted on pushing this largely ahistorical, film vs television binary that refuses to acknowledge the significance of anime's media mix. Also, this is /ic/; why would you want to discourage people from replicating the styles of their favorite character designers?

>> No.4209678

>>4209507
>Most anime is made with merchandise at the forefront.
This is not a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination. Your average person on /m/ is fully aware that most of the anime they enjoy watching are also some of the world's oldest and longest toy commercials.
>Even up to today there are many amazing artists making their debuts.
Yes, you may recall that 2015's Japan Animator Expo was organized in part with the hope that it would recapture the magic of DAICON III and IV's Opening Animations as well as the early days of Gainax. Many of the newer artists who were featured are now working in the industry today. On the flip-side, the internet has enabled independent creators to single-handedly produce their own films like Atsuya Uki's Cencoroll and Cencoroll Connect. I agree that we should support these creators, but saying that "we should value them more" is kind of a vapid statement because nothing is really gonna help their labor conditions without organizing themselves.

What's a good scanner that would fit deleter A4 paper?

something roughly within the 100$ to 200$ range. I don't really care about color as I do things mostly in black and white.

Also what scanners do you generally use?

Yes, I didn't realize it was the model I mentioned in OP.

The maximum scanning area is 8.5" x 11.7". A4 is 8.27" × 11.69". You're fine.

I'm using the Lide 220 right now. My main issue with it is that whatever is near the edge of the scanner scans blurry. Does the 400 model have that problem?

>> No.4208170

>>4205891
That's pretty much standard page size. I prefer Canon, for non-professional scanning, they're great. The one you have a picture of is fine - it's the perfection series, which is geared towards art/photos - the LIDE series is more of an office scanner, which is geared towards ocr/document scanning.

I don't use the included software, though - I just take a scan with no dust removal or color shifting/correction, because I do that myself, I was trained in it years ago, so i can't say how good the software is. I just dump the sensor to a file. For black and white, the one you posted is overkill for B&W, but it's $100 - and the extra quality might be handy down the road. Now that scanners are LEDs, they last years - the servo motors will go long before the sensor. As long as you have low mileage on it, you should have it around a long time.

>> No.4208172

>>4206248
Old scanners are iffy, if they're not modern LED lighting and newer sensors. Old scanners usually have a limited life on the lights, and replacing them can be an issue.

Twitter is better for people who are into online niche communities like anime/furries/fanart. Also is the more popular with professional animators and concept artists.
Instagram is popular with people who are more into conceptual/"art school" type art and primarily network IRL. I use it to follow painters, printmakers, ceramics artists.
Of course there is crossover between platforms but this is the general trend I have noticed.

How important is your Art name online ?

I've always gone by a half assed one consisting of my initials plus the word art and now I'm considering changing it, potentially to my real name, simply. Plus I think it looks amateurish to have a "something art" page. Like you don't need to have your name say Art, right ?

Anyway what's your take on this whole thing ?

here is my opinon but i mostly just draw characters

in order:
-understanding of form and perspective
-composition and shape design
-rendering form with color and light

imo if you are getting stuck on how to work with color, it might be more of a issue on how to work with specific stylistic choices (eg. how can i pain in nathan fowkes' style?) rather than a problem with your fundies.

I'm not good with lineart at all - I don't know why drawing is impossibly hard for me to do. My guess? Lack of practice. I just don't have a desire to do it, though. I hate myself.

Either way, I do like coloring and inking.

Have you tried just practing construction and then doing line art on top. You don’t want to over do it as a crutch but it can help with developing the muscle memory rooted in understanding form to do line art more smoothly.

If we're going to be smartasses here then I'll tell you that photorealism is in fact still symbol drawing. The act of drawing is the creation of symbols made up of lines and values arranged in a certain way to imitate real life. When you're drawing a photorealistic eye you're not actually creating a real eye, you are simply laying down charcoal in a way that resembles what an eye looks like. A heightened amount of detail does not stop something from being a symbol.

I understood it as symbol drawing being when you draw the first thing that pops in your mind/ an Icon of something instead of what it actually looks like
Like a flat flower with 5 oval petals, actually looking at a flower will reveal that the shapes are a lot more complex
